I have several private Client who have done this and after I have undertaken a ‘needs analysis’ I sometimes build them a new website from scratch the proper way and hence get it highly ranked in the search engines.

This is the process I follow, simplified:-

Get to undertand the Market and the Customer
Perform Keyword Research to see…
1. What people are searching for i.e. what keywords they are typing into the search box (in the search engines)
1. How any people are searching for it
2. How much competition there is
From that I identify
1. The possible keywords to target
2. The ease (or difficulty) of getting a top search engine ranking for those keywords
3. The likely amount of traffic that can be brought to the website
4. Suitable domain names (Note how far this comes down the list?)
If I believe that Wordpress is a suitable platform, and it is not always, I will design a Theme, or suggest a ready-made Theme for the website.
Prepare a cost estimate for the Client to build the website and to undertake the Search Engine Marketing
Provide all the above information, that may well include videos specially made to prove that my research is accurate and thorough, to the Client Free of charge.

Note that if a Wordpress platform is deemed by myself and/or the Client not to be suitable, I will offer an alternative platform, such as a data-base driven website using php scripts.
